Cocofloss
Nobody needs to spend $9 on floss. But should one choose to, mint Cocofloss is the way to go. As a lifelong Glide user, I’d already been accustomed to paying more for better floss. After all, getting cheap strands of floss stuck between your teeth is a truly terrible experience. Cocofloss takes the upsell to a whole new level, all the while wrapping it in now-dated 2010s millenial branding. Cocofloss singlehandedly upgraded the floss category into a beauty product when it launched in the upsell bins at Sephora.
I first experienced Cocofloss in 2017, back when I switched to a new dentist. Dr. Shin used Cocofloss at my cleaning appointment, telling me it was her friend’s company and that it was made out of coconuts, hence the name. Mildly intrigued, I had her toss a few samples in my goodie bag and stowed them away in my toiletry kit. I subsequently forgot about it, save for on trips, when I would rediscover its refreshingly natural flavor and unique texture—unlike Glide, which is thin and slippery, or waxy cheap floss, Cocofloss is thick and bouncy, the Charmin Ultrasoft of dental hygiene. It’s like flossing with yarn. A yarn that never breaks.
After finally running out of a Costco multipack of Glide and depleting my sample stockpile (which by then I remembered to replenish at each dental cleaning), I took the plunge and got a Cocofloss subscription. The thought of never running out of floss AND saving money AND helping the earth felt too good to be true!
Lo & behold, like all successful DTC products, it was. Google revealed that Cocofloss is made out of plastic; the only thing coconut about it is the oil used to make it slippery & vacation smelling. The subscription did not stop me from running out, and refills kept arriving at my old apartment after I moved. I cancelled after struggling to update my shipping address. One refill got caught in the dispenser, tangling into a miniature mess of cotton candy that I had to toss out. And let’s be real, I saved no money when even the refills cost twice as much as Glide.
So after running out of Cocofloss again, what did I do? I immediately went on Amazon and Primed myself some more.
