In lieu of our go-to little gem salad, Raf and I recently tried the grilled cabbage at Lilia on our 9 year anniversary. Sweet, versatile, and straightforward, cabbage is our new cruciferous king, a perfect vegetable for these chaotic, inflationary times. I confess—this post was originally meant to be dedicated to cabbage, but a friend gently broke the news that I’m way behind—Grubstreet said it first, in September, and the Times covered it second, in March.
Retroactive trendspotting aside, I hope you’ve been enjoying lots of cabbage lately. And if not, you could always try making some at home or ordering a dish next time you’re out. A few of my favorite renditions are:
The hispi cabbage at Kødbyens Fiskebar in Copenhagen—say it with me now, hispi! Sadly, hispi cabbage—smaller and pointy—seems only available in Europe.
The stuffed cabbage at Superiority Burger—where I finally got to try their renowned pearl pie! Need to go back stat.
The stir-fried cabbage at Uluh.
While cabbage is certainly having its moment, one thing past its prime is quality streaming content. Lately, I’ve experienced the utmost fatigue with the mediocre options on Netflix, and switching to one of our five other streaming services hardly makes things better. I can’t believe we now get Peacock, which, with The Traitors, Top Chef, and Below Deck, might actually be the best bet for now. This month, I’ve tried to read actual books on most nights. And since books require light, I bought the Glocusent LED Neck Reading Light after spotting it on The Wirecutter. This rather ugly device rests upon my neck, providing two focused beams of illumination, good enough to get me through my current read—No Judgements, Lauren Oyler’s book of essays on contemporary criticism—whether I’m in our dimly lit living room or in bed as Raf sleeps.
Post-Japan, most of my shopping has been focused on our new puppy son, Bing Bong. Buying dog accessories, food, and treats is not particularly enthralling—with the exception of this bougie leash/harness I found on SSENSE and then ordered off the brand’s site to get 10% off.
I feel you on the streaming services....I too am finding myself reading more given the lack of high quality content. I did pick up Hulu to watch Shogun, which is perfect for anyone that liked Game of Thrones.
